In 2022, and as team “Dragonfish” we have secured entry for the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, which is the premier event in global ocean rowing and a 3,000-mile row across the world’s second largest ocean. The race begins in La Gomera in the Canary Islands and finishes in Antigua in the Caribbean. Over the course of our journey, we will be entirely self-sufficient: sleeping on the boat, making our own water and relying on freeze-dried food packs for sustenance. We expect the race to take us between 45 and 90 days.
As part of this challenge, we will be raising money for 2 wonderful charities, Durrell and Macmillan Jersey. Both of these charities are very close to our hearts and we have been supporters of them both for many years.
Our fundraising journey with our first chosen charity, Durrell began in 2015 when we competed in a 150 mile 6-day ultramarathon through the Amazon Forest of Brazil. We are passionate about conservation and are supporting the first Rewild Carbon project in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil. The project aims to restore 4,500 hectares of vital forest corridors by 2030.
Durrell’s mission as a charity is to save species from extinction, but in order to save species, you also need to save their habitat. Durrell have worked to restore and protect some of the most threatened habitats on the planet over the last 60 years. This not only saves species, it has the added benefit of capturing and sequestering carbon, repairing the damage humans have caused to nature.’
Like so many we have been exposed to the horrors of Cancer over the past few years and our second chosen charity, Macmillan Jersey have become a necessary part of our life and that of so many other islanders.
Macmillan Jersey’s mission is to play a key role in supporting people affected by cancer and their loved ones, whilst helping to shape the islands strategy for cancer care.
Their vision is that everybody affected by cancer in Jersey will have access to emotional, practical and wellbeing support, through their preferred route of contact. Support will be delivered in a way that meets people’s needs from diagnosis and beyond, and from whichever source is best placed to deliver this.
We are truly thankful that there are organisations like Macmillan Jersey that are there to offer support to people in Jersey with any type of cancer and at any stage.
